Horribly Lovely

by Jonathan Kohrs

An experiential novel about intimacy and one man's journey into his own beautiful and painful love story.

What's the book about?

Have you ever had a big fight with the one you love and realized you were in a fight with yourself?  Inside there's a part of you screaming in the dark, afraid to express the real unfiltered you that's hiding in the shame of a horribly lovely dumpster fire.

As an an empathic neurodivergent love addict confused by the masculine box of society, this book is an alchemical adventure into love.  The main character, the poetic voices in my heart.  The heroine, the romantic relationships that viscerally brought it back to life.

  • For closet romantics: You love love and want vulnerability with all the uncomfortable darkness.

  • For steely expresses: You love all your feels but have never allowed yourself to just be messy with someone.

  • For symbolic seekers: You love the beauty in life and wonder about the meaning of the cover color Amaranth.

Love was meant to set them free. Instead, it shattered everything.

Ben falls in love. He gets married. He has children. And suddenly, he gets divorced. Now, in the quiet space beyond “happily ever after,” Ben must find the courage to face his shame—and rebuild what he destroyed.

Horribly Lovely is a spiritual romantic memoir that explores the truest sense of love, what remains after heartbreak, and the beauty of beginning again and again. Told with raw honesty and poetic intensity, it invites readers to feel every fracture, every fragile hope—and to believe that even the most broken hearts can be redeemed.

About the author

Jonathan Kohrs writes about love, exploring questions of identity, healing, and the messy, beautiful work of becoming. He does so with the raw, unfiltered beauty of being human, weaving symbolic narratives that are dreamlike, lyrical, and poetic.

Drawing on Jungian psychology, shamanism, and the Enneagram, Jonathan writes about how it feels to descend into love's underworld. He hopes his writing gives us all permission to express our own experiences authentically and unfiltered, in all its weird, maddening truth.

Jonathan lives in Kansas City with his three children, continuing his own descent into the work of becoming.
